For importers, distributors and promotional product buyers across Southeast Asia, the Vietnamese flag is a dependable line item. It moves for national day and Tet programmes, football and SEA Games merchandise, diaspora community events, hotel and cruise ship ranges, and as part of any general ASEAN national flag assortment.
The difficulty is rarely the design — it is the specification. A flag that looks correct on a screen can arrive with the wrong ratio, a star that is too small, a heading that does not match the pole, or grommets that tear out in the first strong wind. This guide walks through the four decisions that define a Vietnam flag order: proportions, size, heading and hardware, and fabric.
The Design and Its Proportions
Vietnam’s national flag is a red field with a centred gold five-pointed star, one point facing upward. The accepted proportion is 2:3, width to length — so a 100 × 150 cm flag is an exact specification, while a 90 × 150 cm flag is not.
The star is proportionally large compared with many national flags. As a working rule, the distance from the centre of the flag to the tip of each star point runs around one-fifth of the flag’s length, giving a circumscribed diameter of roughly two-fifths of the length. Star size and centring are the two details buyers notice first, so always confirm artwork before mass production. If you hold an approved vector file, supply it. If not, the star geometry can be set to the ratio you approve on a physical sample.
One practical point: a great deal of stock sold in the region is 3:5 rather than 2:3. For general promotional use this is usually acceptable. For government, school, ceremonial or protocol buyers, confirm the required ratio in writing before ordering.
Size Selection
Because the Vietnam flag is a 2:3 design, the sizes below stay in proportion. Handheld and table sizes dominate promotional volume; larger sizes are driven by retail and institutional channels.
| Size (cm) | Ratio | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 10 × 15 | 2:3 | Desk and table flags, plastic or metal base |
| 15 × 22.5 | 2:3 | Hand waving, event giveaways |
| 20 × 30 | 2:3 | Parades, supporter flags, school packs |
| 30 × 45 | 2:3 | Small hand flag, indoor display, car window |
| 60 × 90 | 2:3 | Wall bracket, window, indoor retail display |
| 80 × 120 | 2:3 | Residential pole, balcony |
| 90 × 135 | 2:3 | Standard outdoor flag, mid-size pole |
| 100 × 150 | 2:3 | The common outdoor and event size |
| 120 × 180 | 2:3 | Commercial poles, forecourts |
| 150 × 225 | 2:3 | Stadium and venue poles |
| 180 × 270 and above | 2:3 | Large venues, building facades |
Note that 90 × 150 cm is widely traded even though it is a 3:5 format. If your buyer expects a true-to-proportion 2:3 flag, specify 90 × 135 cm or 100 × 150 cm instead.
Fabric Options
Fabric choice drives how a flag behaves on the pole, how it hangs indoors and how it feels to the end customer. The main options for a Vietnam flag are:
| Fabric | Approx. weight | Well suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Knitted polyester (warp-knit) | 100–130 gsm | General outdoor flags; the standard choice for dye-sublimation printing |
| Woven / spun polyester | 110–160 gsm | Heavier hand, larger sizes, retail-grade outdoor flags |
| Nylon (e.g. 210D) | Light | Light-wind conditions, packable travel and giveaway items |
| Polyester mesh | Varies | Large flags on exposed sites, where reduced wind load matters |
| Satin or soft polyester | Light | Indoor, ceremonial and table flags where drape and sheen count
