2026年10月15日Why Packaging Deserves a Place in Your Order Spec
Export packaging Southeast Asia importers can rely on is usually the result of decisions made weeks before the container is loaded, not a last-minute scramble at the factory door. For importers, distributors and promotional product buyers sourcing printed flags, banners and textile items from China, the box is doing several jobs at once: it protects the goods through a long sea leg, it carries the information customs and warehouse staff need, and in retail channels it often becomes part of the product presentation.
Getting it wrong rarely shows up as a dramatic failure. More often it appears as crushed corners, musty-smelling polyester, faded ink on a carton side, or a carton count that does not match the packing list. Each of those costs time at the port and money in the margin.
What Your Cartons Face on the Way to Southeast Asia
Humidity, heat and condensation
Most Southeast Asian markets sit in a warm, humid climate year round, and the region’s rainy seasons add another layer of risk. A steel container moving through equatorial waters can experience wide day-to-night temperature swings. Warm, moist air inside the box cools against the container walls overnight, and moisture condenses into what the trade calls container rain. That water drips onto the top layer of cargo.
Textiles are absorbent. A carton that takes on moisture can produce a musty smell, mildew spotting, dye transfer between folded items, and rust marks from staples or metal fittings. Practical countermeasures include:
- Individual polybags for finished flags and textile pieces, with the bag sealed rather than loosely tucked
- Desiccant sachets inside master cartons for long-transit or high-value orders
- A moisture barrier liner for full container loads, especially in the wet season
- Loading only in dry conditions, and rejecting cartons that have been sitting in damp storage
- Avoiding wet or damp pallets, which transfer moisture upward into the bottom layer
Multiple handling points
Much of the cargo moving into the region is consolidated. Cartons may be transshipped through a hub port, unloaded, restacked and reloaded alongside cargo from other suppliers. Loose cartons in a less-than-container-load shipment can be stacked several rows deep. Corner boards, edge protectors and strapping on palletised loads reduce the damage that comes from that extra handling.
Choosing Cartons and Inner Packaging
Corrugated grade for lightweight, bulky goods
Flags and banners are light but bulky, which changes the engineering logic. The carton is not usually fighting the weight of its contents; it is fighting stacking pressure from the cartons above it, and compression strength drops as humidity rises. That is why a heavier board grade is often worth the small unit-cost difference on ocean freight shipments, even when the product itself is light.
As a rule of thumb, double-wall five-ply master cartons are a sensible default for palletised export loads, while single-wall cartons can work for small retail packs that will not be stacked high. Carton dimensions should be chosen to fit your pallet footprint cleanly, so cartons do not overhang the pallet edge where they can be crushed by strapping or neighbouring freight.
Inner packaging that matches the sales channel
- Bulk and distributor orders: folded flags banded with a paper wrap, then polybagged, with a size and quantity label readable without opening the bag.
- Retail orders: header card or hang tag, barcode, and a polybag sized to the folded product so it presents neatly on a peg or shelf.
- Promotional orders: individual polybags with an insert card or branded label, particularly where the buyer is kitting several items together.
Carton Marking and Shipping Marks: What Belongs on the Box
Carton marking is your communication channel to everyone who touches the shipment after it leaves the factory: the forwarder, the customs broker, the receiving clerk and the returns team. Marks should be complete, consistent with the packing list and legible from a distance.
| Mark element | Typical content | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Consignee | Ship-to name, city, contact | Routes the carton if the pallet is broken down |
| Order reference | PO number, style or SKU | Links cartons to the purchase order for receiving and invoicing |
| Carton sequence | Carton 4 of 18 | Instantly shows short shipments or mixed-up pallets |
| Contents summary | Size, colour, quantity per carton | Lets warehouse staff pick stock without opening every box |
| Weights and measure | Gross weight, net weight, dimensions | Needed for freight calculation and manual handling decisions |
| Destination port | Port of discharge, final destination | Reduces misrouting during transshipment |
| Country of origin | Country of manufacture | Commonly required for customs clearance and consumer labelling |
| Handling pictograms | Keep dry, this way up, fragile | Gives handlers instructions even where language differs |
Printing method and ink
Direct printing onto the corrugated board generally holds up better in humid conditions than an adhesive label, which can lift at the edges when the board surface takes on moisture. If labels are used, choose an adhesive suited to a humid transit and apply them to a dry surface. Whichever method you pick, keep marks away from areas that will be covered by tape, stra
